Happy Easter everyone!

It's so very eggciting to be getting our Easter holidays after a very busy term in Sonas class.

As always, we have been working very hard and learning lots of new skills.

Since Christmas, we have worked especially hard on two very different, but very important skills: working as a group and learning to work independently. As a group, we can now share, sing, dance, play and work together. The children have loved our Gymboree sessions with Mary and really enjoyed singing songs, playing instruments and sensory play.

In Maths, we have started to work on number sense and addition. The children have learned number rhymes and songs and we have used concrete manipulatives to help them learn number facts.

The children are also getting very good at working independently, completing tasks without distraction or assistance and showing just how much they have learned! As part of engineers week, we looked at jigsaws, colour inserts and building blocks. The children's work was truly fabulous, showing that we have potential engineers and designers in our lovely class.

There's been lots of fun times this term, and we've learned lots too! Hope everyone has an eggcellent Easter and we're looking forward to another action packed term before Summer.

Happy Easter :)

Happy New Year!

Well, we're back to welcome all the new things that 2017 will bring to our class in Sonas.

All of the children had a lovely Christmas and are happy to be back at school again.

We certainly have gotten off to a flying start...

We have been playing co-operative games in class such as rice play, block building and parachute games (they are great fun!)

It's not all play though!!

 Reading & Writing

We have also started to combine sounds to make short words, also called CVC words. We listen to the words in full, then hear them sounded out and write/insert the correct letter sounds. This is the beginning of learning to read. The children are doing very well with their words and their writing is getting much better. We look forward to learning lots more words this month..

Swimming

After all that hard work we decided to do something fun for PE for the coming months. We are beginning swimming from Monday 23rd January. This should be great fun. Our friends in Ms. Ruane's Spraoi class are going too, so we'll have great fun together. We cannot wait to try new things, so this will be a super experience for us all.

Ho-Ho-Ho!

This month the little elves in Sonas Class have been super busy!

We have been reading stories such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Peace at Last  and The Three Little Pigs. The children are learning to sequence their stories and retell them using pictures and phrases. We have adopted the characters for little dramas based on the stories and we have houses from straw, sticks and bricks..

Ms. Quinn came to visit our class for a couple of days and she brought her guitar. This was brilliant fun...singing songs and learning about instruments is something the children in our class really enjoy.

Now, the Christmas Spirit is filling our room. We are listening to, and learning Christmas songs such as Jingle Bells and Frosty the Snowman. We have been really artistic making paper plate snowmen, Santa faces, Christmas trees, Snowflakes and Christmas stockings. During these activities we have learned a lot of cutting skills, colour identification, counting skills, shape recognition and group-work skills. We cannot wait for Santa to come this Christmas and see how good the children have been this year! Phew...it's been a busy month, but in Sonas Class we like keeping busy!

Winter is here!

Since we came back to school after our Halloween break we have been very busy at school. Some of the things we have been learning about are Houses and Homes. The children made beautiful felt houses and learned the words for parts of houses. We even created our own street in the school called 'Sonas Street'.

We are also working on a new Maths idea called Touch Maths- this is a great way for us to learn our numbers, identify our numbers and will be a big help when we start adding numbers together!

Finally we are looking at the weather and the seasons. We are learning the days of the week and starting to talk about Winter. Since the weather has gotten so much colder and Jack Frost has made an appearance, we decided to have a snowball fight in class and make snow angels! Great fun!

Starting school

Starting School at St. Attracta's:

We are grateful to have a wonderful class of children in our Sonas Class. We started our school year by taking pictures of the children on their first day and getting to know each other.
Everyone is settling in very well. There are artists, singers, builders, footballers and much more in our room.
The children have been working hard on setting up their school day routines and learning through play.
We have been so lucky to have Senior students participating in our Friendship Squad, which allows us to have helpers in outdoor activities and making friends at school.
Starting school is always a big transition for everyone, but having a happy school environment makes everything a little easier.
The children in Sonas have been working really hard on learning their colours, shapes, early numbers and starting tuition on phonics.
The colours we have studied to date are Blue & Red, the numbers 1 & 2 and the letters S, A, T, I, P & N.
We know our sounds and can write our letters quite well now :)
